Tokyo Atelier of Photography crafts beautiful prints from your treasured images, and presents them to you in a framing that's tailored to your style.

We can produce prints from your digital camera file, or from negative or positive film. Frames are custom made to your print size or your own specifications. We will accept orders as small as a single print.

If for any reason you are not satisfied with the quality of our service, we are prepared to re-print your image at no extra cost, or refund your money.

Cotton Rag paper & Archival Inks

Tokyo Atelier of Photography predominately use Hahnemuehle Photo Rag 308gsm (Matt paper) and Crane's Museo Silver Rag (Glossy paper), which are made from 100% cotton rag and acid-free.
Maximum print size is 24x60" (61.0x152.4cm).

We use Epson's highly archival pigment inks for both colour and black and white prints to produce high quality and long lasting photographs. Tokyo Atelier of Photography's superior colour management system has been developed with an ICC profile created by X-Rite's Profiler to match our technical environment.

'Washi' paper made by Living National Treasure Ichibei Iwano

By special arrangement, we are able to provide hand-made kozo (mulberry) paper, also known as Echizen paper, crafted by the ninth-generation master Ichibei Iwano, designated an Intangible Cultural Asset or Living National Treasure. Echizen paper is a speciality of Fukui prefecture, and has a history dating back over 1500 years. Each sheet of paper is painstakingly created by the master himself using traditional techniques from the finest materials and pure local water, to produce 100% kozo 'washi' of the highest quality.

The maximum print size is 24x36" (61.0x91.4cm).

Frames

Standard frames start from simple aluminum frames from Nielsen Bainbridge, to wooden frames chosen to suit your photograph and your style. We use UV cut acrylic as a protective layer over the photograph. The UV cut acrylic protects photographs against UV, dust, humidity and acidic substances. Tokyo Atelier of Photography also uses TRUVUE's UV cut clear glass and UV cut non-reflecting glass.

We can also accept orders for framing alone.
Maximum frame size is 40x60" (101.6x152.4cm)

Mat Boards

Tokyo Atelier of Photography uses Bainbridge's high-end Alpharag Artcare mat boards, commonly used by domestic and international museums and conservators. Alpharag is 100% cotton rag and acid-free, with an alkaline buffered agent added to protect photographs from degrading through exposure to acidic substances in the air. Tokyo Atelier of Photography uses primarily 4 ply or 8 ply mat boards (1.4mm or 2.8mm thick) in 10 colours, including white, pearl white or antique white.

Environmental impact

Acid-free cotton rag is more durable and has better permanence than wood-pulp based paper. Since the raw material, cotton, is re-grown annually, harvesting has a lower impact, making it a more environmentally friendly paper.
We believe that choosing a paper based on a sustainable raw material is one way we can contribute to protecting the environment.
